Google Search is not dead. Google's absolute query volume grew year-on-year through 2025, per the company's own earnings reports. What changed: ChatGPT reached 400 million weekly active users by February 2025, and the two products now compete for the same informational queries. The race is not over. It is just started.

The short answer: No. ChatGPT did not kill Google Search. It forced Google to change what Search is.

Google Is Not Dying. It Is Losing Ground.

Statcounter, Similarweb, and Google's Q2 2025 earnings all show the same thing: total search query volume is still rising. More people searched on Google in 2025 than in 2024. The raw number is not the problem.

The problem is share. Google built its dominance on being the default answer to every question. That default is eroding. When someone wants to understand a concept, debug code, or get a tailored recommendation, a growing fraction of users now go to ChatGPT first. Google's slice of the information-retrieval market is contracting, even as the market grows.

Inside Google, they saw it coming. The New York Times reported in April 2023 that Sundar Pichai and other executives described the rise of ChatGPT as a "code red." That memo was internal, but the response was public: Google launched AI Overviews at Google I/O in May 2024, rolled them out to all US users immediately, and by August 2025 claimed 1.5 billion users per month were seeing them. That is not the behavior of a company ignoring a threat.

Where Each Tool Wins

Google Search

  • Local search ("near me")
  • Shopping and product comparison
  • Navigational queries (brand names)
  • News and real-time events
  • Images, maps, video results
  • Gambling and casino comparisons

ChatGPT

  • Coding help and debugging
  • Writing and editing assistance
  • Multi-step reasoning tasks
  • Summarizing long documents
  • Creative and generative tasks
  • Explaining complex concepts

The overlap — informational queries — is where competition is real.

The Zero-Click Problem Is More Dangerous Than ChatGPT

For SEO practitioners, the ChatGPT headline obscures the closer threat. SparkToro's June 2024 analysis found 58.5% of Google searches end without a click. The user gets their answer on the results page and leaves. No traffic. No conversion. No affiliate click.

AI Overviews accelerate this. When Google's AI block answers a question at the top of the page, the organic results below it lose click share. Google's own data shows 1.5 billion users saw AI Overviews monthly by August 2025. For affiliates, the immediate revenue risk is not users switching to ChatGPT. It is Google answering the query before the user reaches the affiliate's page.

ChatGPT is gaining. But Google's own product decisions are cannibalizing affiliate clicks faster than any external competitor.

What This Means for Gambling Affiliates

ChatGPT's gambling content policies are restrictive. OpenAI's usage policies limit promotional gambling content. ChatGPT does not serve "best casino bonuses" queries the way Google does. For the moment, a user looking to compare sportsbooks or find a welcome offer is still going to Google.

The competitive risk for gambling affiliates is internal to Google, not external. AI Overviews can now answer "what is the best online casino for UK players?" with a list pulled from review sites, without sending the user anywhere. The affiliate in that list may get a mention. They may not get the click.

The response is not to abandon SEO. It is to optimize for citation, not just position. Pages structured to be quoted by AI Overviews survive the zero-click environment better than pages built only for rank. This site's guide to getting cited in AI Overviews covers the mechanics.

Google's Answer — And Why It Has a Chance

Google's moats are structural. ChatGPT does not have Google Maps, Google Shopping, YouTube, or Android. Google is the default search engine on most smartphones shipped worldwide. The distribution advantage alone means billions of queries per day that are never up for grabs.

Gemini is embedded in Android, Chrome, and the Google app. AI Overviews are served to 1.5 billion monthly users without those users opting in. Google Lens, multimodal search, and real-time web integration give Google capabilities ChatGPT's web-based interface cannot match for local and visual queries.

Google also has something ChatGPT does not: a decade of shopping and ad data. When someone searches for a product on Google, the intent signal is sharper than anything a conversation history can provide. That data moat is hard to replicate.

None of this means Google wins the informational query market permanently. It means they have better tools to fight for it than the "Google is dying" narrative suggests.

It changed what Google Search has to be. Google is now an AI product company defending a search franchise, not a search company adding AI features. That shift, forced by ChatGPT, is real and permanent. The traffic charts that matter for affiliates are not ChatGPT's visitor count. They are the click-through rate on Google's organic results, which AI Overviews are eroding from inside.

Build pages that answer questions well enough to be cited in AI Overviews. That is the adaptation. Not abandoning Google. Not betting on ChatGPT. Getting cited by both.
