Spotify does not help your Google rankings. Not directly. The audio file on Spotify is invisible to Google's crawler. What does help is what you build around your podcast: episode pages, transcripts, show notes, hosted on a domain you control. Spotify is distribution. SEO is what you build at home.

0Direct ranking signals Spotify sends to Google

78%of podcast show-note pages include at least one followed link to the guest's website (Aira analysis)

What Spotify Sends to Google

Google cannot index audio. It never has been able to. When you upload an episode to Spotify, Google's crawler sees nothing it can rank. The Spotify show page (open.spotify.com/show/...) exists on Spotify's domain. Links from that page back to yours are typically nofollow. They pass no link equity.

Springcast's 2026 podcast SEO guide: "Spotify and Apple are distribution, not your home. Each episode needs its own indexable page on a domain you control."

Google tried to index podcast content through its own discovery infrastructure. Episodes surface in search results when Google finds the text around your podcast: metadata, transcripts, show notes. Not the audio itself.

Where the SEO Credit Goes

Spotify Gets the Play. Your Site Gets the Rank.

Your Podcast Episode
Spotify / Apple Podcasts
Distribution platform
❌ Google can't index audio
❌ nofollow outbound links
❌ Zero ranking signal
Your Episode Page
On your own domain
✅ Indexed by Google
✅ Earns followed backlinks
✅ Builds topical authority

The SEO value lives on your domain, not Spotify's servers.

Where Podcast SEO Lives

Podcasting helps SEO in three ways. None of them involve Spotify.

  1. Episode pages on your own domain. Each episode gets a URL you control, a written title and description Google can crawl, and ideally a full transcript. This is the asset that ranks. Not the Spotify listing. The page.
  2. Backlinks from the host's website. Guest appearances earn followed links from the host's show notes page. That link passes real equity to your domain. Aira's analysis of podcast show notes found 78% include at least one followed link to the guest's site. That's the SEO win. Not Spotify.
  3. Branded search volume. A podcast grows your audience. A larger audience searches for your brand more often on Google. Branded search is a recognized signal. It comes from the people who heard you on Spotify and typed your name into Google. Not from the Spotify listing itself.

Schema Markup Helps. A Little.

Descript's podcast SEO guide and Fame.so's breakdown both say the same thing: Google indexes the text surrounding your podcast, not the audio. Adding PodcastSeries and PodcastEpisode schema to your episode pages helps Google understand the content type and index it more accurately.

But as of mid-2025, Google does not list podcast as a supported rich-result type with a dedicated search carousel. Structured data helps. Don't expect a podcast badge in results the way you'd get a recipe card.

Run This Audit on Your Podcast Pages

Run an AI-assisted site audit on your podcast domain. This video from Jono Catliff shows how. A single Claude Code prompt crawls your site, surfaces indexing gaps, and generates fixes. The technique at the 12:44 mark is directly applicable to podcast episode pages:

Run it on your podcast domain. Check for episode pages missing from the index, show notes without schema markup, and transcript pages with thin content. Those gaps are fixable.

Two Platforms. One Does the SEO Work.

Spotify is a distribution platform. Google is a text index. The two do not overlap. You can build real SEO value from a podcast: owned episode pages, guest backlinks, brand search growth. None of it comes from the Spotify listing itself.

The sites ranking from podcasting treat each episode as a page first and a Spotify file second. The audio goes everywhere. The page that ranks stays on their domain.
